Design Appraisal
New buildings and some extensions to existing buildings need to meet certain standards in terms of accessibility. An appraisal of building design at the plans stage can identify access issues that could potentially lead to action under the Equality Act 2010 and could be very costly to rectify at later stages in the design.
The design appraisal can also highlight where accessibility can be improved beyond minimal standards in order to achieve a fully inclusive environment. Plans are appraised against relevant requirements and standards such as Part M of the Building Regulations and BS8300 2009 The design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people- Code of Practice.
